Day 2: The Creator
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1
One of the first things we love to do during Advent is decorating. The boxes come down from the loft, we get a tree, the lights go up, wee bits and bobs get hung or placed around the house. Once it’s all finished I love to simply sit, look at, and enjoy it all. Everything looks that bit more beautiful.
In the very first act of all time, God created the heavens and the earth. And it was good. It was beautiful, perfect in every way. Any beauty, or creativity we enjoy is a reflection of this ultimate creation. Any good we might enjoy is given so we might enjoy God and give him glory.
God took six days to create the universe. On the third day, he created trees. On the sixth day he created Adam, the first of the human family tree.
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness.”
Genesis 1:26
From Adam, came Eve. From Eve, came Cain, Abel, Seth and their many siblings. From this one family, the world was populated.
There are now nearly eight billion descendants of Adam and Eve living across the globe. Recent estimates suggest that there may have been up to 100 billion people who have lived across the span of time. 100 billion! That’s 100 billion souls, made beautiful, in the image of God. 100 billion souls, made to give glory to their maker.
This beautiful family was made to be fruitful, have families and fill the earth. They were to rule the creation, in obedient, joyful submission to their creator.
At Christmas we remember the baby who was born 2000 years ago.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:1
What child is this?
Jesus is the child who created all children. He’s the designer, creator, and sustainer of the universe.
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
John 1:14
Jesus is the Creator who entered his creation. His family tree starts with himself.
He created the family of mankind for his glory, and took on humanity as the fullest display of that glory. He came as the true and better Adam, sinless, perfect, truly beautiful. He came so that his creation might once again come to know, enjoy and give glory to their maker.
This Christmas, as we enjoy beauty and creativity all around us, let’s remember Jesus, our Creator, who came so we might enjoy him forever. See beyond the manger, to the dawn of time. See the one who had all power, authority, and glory, lying on a bed of hay. See the one who made you, who came so you could know him.
Joy to the world,
the Lord is come!
